The day fast-bowling fans have been dreading has finally arrived: Dale Steyn has grown up.South Africas supercharged pace spearhead will take a back seat of sorts when he returns to the Test team, with a focus on staying fit even if it means being slightly less fast.If I must be realistic about it, running in and bowling 145kph all day when you havent done it for a long time is going to be really tough. Objective number one is to get through 18 overs a day, maybe dropping in pace, but being as effective as possible. 140 is going to be enough, Steyn said at the launch of the New Zealand Test series in Durban. Theres going to be a day when I can rev it up to 145 and maybe even 150 but weve got somebody like KG (Kagiso Rabada) who can do that now. Steyns more measured approach comes after he experienced first hand the risks of doing too much, too quickly last summer. After a groin strain kept Steyn out of three of South Africas four Tests in India, he tried to rush his way back and broke his shoulder. As I recovered from one, I broke down on the other one and its only because I was going from 0 to 100 way too quickly, Steyn said. If you look at your fast cars, Ferraris, they always tell you drive it to 1000 kays (kms) before you hit 200-plus. I obviously didnt put in 1000 kays, I was just trying to hit 200 and then I bust the shoulder. He recovered in time for the World T20 but was left out of the one-day squad that travelled to the Caribbean in June. Steyn played in the NatWest T20 Blast instead, followed by the CPL, which means he has not had to bowl more than four overs a match this year and is looking forward to the challenge of longer, more intense spells.I love the idea that I can bowl long periods and attack for a whole lot longer by bowling consistently hard lengths with the odd bouncer here and there, he said. In one day cricket, you bowl two hard-length balls and then think this guy might come at me, I have to change up now and then bowl a slower ball. Now, you can really put pressure on batters. You can hit that hard length all day until they make a mistake and thats what I love. I love testing guys patience and its a waiting game. I am a fisherman, I will wait there all day and hopefully find the edge or knock his poles over.New Zealands line-up has been one of the places Steyn has most enjoyed casting his net and one of the fish he hopes to reel in is opening batsman Martin Guptill. I like playing against them and I have had personal success against them. I got Guptill out in the CPL, nicked him off. Straight away he came to me and said, I cant wait to come to South Africa, and I said, Neither can I.Steyns success against New Zealand stretches back to his breakthrough season as an international bowler, when he took successive ten-wicket hauls in a two-match series in the 2007-08 season headlined by the bouncer that damaged Craig Cummins face. Also, Doug Bracewell was his 300th Test wicket and he now has the opportunity to notch up another milestone against New Zealand. With 406 wickets to his name, Steyn is 16 away from overtaking Shaun Pollock and becoming South Africas leading wicket-taker. For now, though, that is not a goal on his mind. That stuff annoys me. When I went to Bangladesh everyone said you are going to get 400 wickets and then the rain came and it was a nightmare and then people said in India, if you bowl well you can get Pollys record and then I did a groin and then they said if bowl well against England, you will get it. I am not interested in any records. It will be a record if I can get through a game without injury. Marian Hossa Jersey . The quest begins with what is supposed to be an easy one, although Germany has traditionally been a stubborn opponent to Canadian teams at international tournaments. Staff Report, NASCAR Wire ServiceDistributed by The Sports XchangeThe winner, a fresh-faced kid from Connecticut who nonetheless seemingly has been in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series forever. The runner-up, a 20-year-old with a NASCAR Hall of Fame pedigree. Third place, a prodigy with the California cool persona that should one day win him titles.Joey Logano (26), Chase Elliott (20) and Kyle Larson (24) finished 1-2-3 in this seasons first Michigan race, forming the youngest top three in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series history. In Sundays Pure Michigan 400 (2 p.m. ET on NBCSN), the same aero package will be in play as the June race. That could bode well for the crop of talented youngsters, which also includes 26-year-old Austin Dillon who finished eighth in June and 22-year-old Ryan Blaney who finished 17th.Though there are few guarantees in NASCAR, a strong run by the driver of the No. 22 Ford feels like the closest to a sure thing at Michigan.Logano owns seven straight top-10 finishes at MIS, including two wins. During that streak, Logano has led the most laps in three races. For his career, Logano claims two wins, four top fives, 10 top 10s and an average finish of 12.8 in the Great Lakes State.Look for first-time winner in final road course race of XFINITY Series seasonOn Monday at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Brennan Poole helped unveil a new ticket program that offered free tickets for any kids under the age of 12.It was an exciting start to the week for Poole, who explained the new program to a throng of children who assembled for the kids-only press conference. Now, he looks for an exciting end to the week, this time in Road Americas victory lane with a trophy -- and Chase berth -- in hand. And statistically speaking, it just might happen following Saturdays Road America 180 Fired Up By Johnsonville (3 p.m. ET on NBCSN).Poole looks to become the latest first-time winner at Road America. Over the last six and half seasons (2010-2016) the NASCAR Xfinity Series has seen 20 first-time series winners, and over that time, six (30 percent) have come from two tracks: Road America and Texas Motor Speedway.Road Americas series first-time winners are Nelson Piquet Jr. (2012), AJ Allmendinger (2013) and Brendan Gaughan (2014). This season, the NASCAR XFINITY Series has seen two new first-time winners -- Daniel Suarez at Michigan and Justin Marks at Mid-Ohio.Brennan Poole joins Brandon Jones, Darrell Wallace Jr., Blake Koch and Ryan Sieg as drivers inside the top-12 in points who are still looking for their first NASCAR Xfinity Series career win. With Chase spots dwindling, Hemric may need a winDaniel Hemric has enjoyed a strong sophomore season, scoring top 10s in all but three races this season. The success has launched him to second in the points standings. But if he doesnt win a race -- which he has yet to do -- all that success might mean nothing. With three races remaining prior to the inaugural NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Chase, chances to lock up a spot are dwindling.ddddddddddddThere have been six winners, who would each take one of the eight Chase spots. If there are two new winners, that would leave Hemric on the outside looking in, regardless of a potential second-place points finish. So, Saturdays Career for Veterans 200 (1 p.m. ET on FS1) holds even more importance to Hemric, who drives for Michigan native Brad Keselowski.Michigan is a very important race for our entire company, Hemric said. Going off of how I ran at Michigan last year and knowing how the truck needs to feel will play big into how we approach practice. The most important thing is making sure the truck is exactly where it needs to be in the race. You have to get your truck to where its not only fast, but it also drives good; thats the key at Michigan. The guy who can stay in the gas the longest is probably going to be the best.Hemric will go for his first career win at Michigan where he finished seventh last year in his first-ever start there.Race Weekend GuideNASCAR Sprint Cup SeriesRace: Pure Michigan 400Place: Michigan International SpeedwayDate and Time: Sunday, Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. ETTune-in: NBCSN, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR RadioDistance: 400 miles (200 laps)What to Watch For: Three races remain until the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, leaving winless drivers just three more chances to secure an automatic berth to the playoffs with a victory. ...
