COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- When both of Texas A&Ms top quarterbacks left the school within days of each other in December, the Aggies were left scrambling to find someone to run Kevin Sumlins high-powered offense. They found it in Trevor Knight , who came to the school as a graduate transfer in January after a successful career at Oklahoma. Knight stepped in as Texas A&Ms starter to become the most successful graduate transfer in the Southeastern Conference this season. Plenty of other schools in the league have received contributions from graduate transfers, too.Knight started 15 games in his first two seasons with the Sooners, with the highlight coming when as a freshman he earned MVP honors in a 45-31 Sugar Bowl win over Alabama by throwing for 348 yards and four touchdowns. But he was benched in favor of Baker Mayfield last season, and instead of spending the rest of his career on the bench, he decided to test his luck with the Aggies. Our situation with Trevor is a good one, coach Kevin Sumlin said. Gave him another chance to play at this level, maybe another shot at playing professionally. Filled a void for us. Dont know theres lot of bad things about it.Knight has thrown for 1,911 yards and 13 touchdowns and ran for 583 yards and 10 more scores in helping the 10th-ranked Aggies to a 7-2 record this season. But he will miss the rest of the regular season after injuring his right shoulder on Saturday. Sumlin hopes he can return to play his last college game for the Aggies in their bowl game.Though some question if these transfers should be allowed, Sumlin doesnt see any problem with them. And this comes from someone who not only benefited from a graduate transfer, but who has let players like this go in the past when it was clear that it was a better situation for them.Jameill Showers was with Sumlin for three seasons, playing behind Ryan Tannehill and then Johnny Manziel before graduating in 2013 and transferring to UTEP, where he became a starter. Matt Joeckel, another backup quarterback for Sumlin, left A&M to play at TCU after graduating.Ive seen both sides of it, Sumlin said. To me my thought process is if a young man comes to your university and does everything you ask him to do, has been a great teammate and graduated from your university, which is the number one thing he came there for, and for whatever reason wants to leave, why not give him chance to go somewhere else to live out his dream? If someone wants to be part of that and they need a quarterback for a year, an older guy, why not?The most controversial graduate transfer this season was the move by defensive back Maurice Smith from Alabama to Georgia . The transfer was at first refused by Alabama coach Nick Saban before being referred to the SEC office, which approved it in August.Smith wanted to transfer after failing to get significant playing time in three seasons with the Crimson Tide. Things have been much different this year with the Bulldogs, for whom hes appeared in nine games with seven starts. Hes tied for fifth on the team with 35 tackles and has an interception and a sack.Mo (Smith) has done a good job as a senior, a guy who walked in the locker room and earned respect by the way he practices, Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. Theres a good core group of kids on this team that want to do well. Its important to them to do well. Thats why were able to keep the continuity of the team together because so many of them are good kids.A look at the contributions of other graduate transfers in the SEC this season:- Alabama receiver Gehrig Dieter . He played at both SMU and Bowling Green before joining the top-ranked Crimson Tide this season. He was a star for Bowling Green last season, finishing with 94 receptions for 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns. His impact has been much more modest for Alabama this year, when he has appeared in seven games and has eight receptions for 175 yards and a touchdown.- Auburn linebacker T.J. Neal. Neal joined the eighth-ranked Tigers after a career at Illinois, where he had 245 tackles in 25 career games. This season, hes played in six games and has 20 tackles, highlighted by a season-high nine tackles in a win over Vanderbilt last week.- Texas A&M tight end Kalvin Cline. He came to A&M after playing at Virginia Tech. His best season there came as a freshman in 2013, when he started seven games and caught 26 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns. This season hes played in all nine games but has mostly been used as a blocker and has just one reception for 17 yards.- Mississippi linebacker Rommel Mageo . In three years at Oregon State, Mageo had 157 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions. This season hes appeared in eight games with two starts and has 28 tackles.- Arkansas offensive lineman Jake Raulerson. He earned his degree in finance at Texas in three years while appearing in 23 games for the Longhorns. This season hes stepped in to start eight games for the Razorbacks at left guard. He has one year of eligibility left following this season after redshirting during his first season at Texas.---AP Sports Writers Charles Odum, John Zenor and David Brandt contributed to this report.---More AP college football at http://collegefootball.ap.orgJalen Brunson Jersey . NEW YORK -- Now that theyve reached .500, Jorge De La Rosa and the Colorado Rockies want to see whats on deck.De La Rosa earned his 100th career victory and Colorado eventually caught up with Bartolo Colon, beating the New York Mets 7-2 on a rainy Saturday night for its fifth straight win.The Rockies matched their longest winning streak of the season, improved to 12-4 since the All-Star break and are within four games of the second NL wild-card spot.We know we have enough talent, De La Rosa said.Said manager Walt Weiss: Next thing in our sights, chase down that wild card.Colorado won despite losing NL home run leader Trevor Story to a jammed left thumb. The rookie shortstop hurt it on a scrambling slide in the fourth, jarred it again moments later diving for a ball and exited early.X-rays on Story were negative. Rockies trainer Keith Dugger said Story might benefit from a day out of the starting lineup, but didnt envision any serious problems.Hes going to be sore, Weiss said.On the day the Mets retired Hall of Fame catcher Mike Piazzas No. 31, the Mets tied their longest skid of the season with a fourth loss in a row. The 43-year-old Colon (9-6) faltered in his first start on three days rest since 2005, and slugger Yoenis Cespedes left in midgame because of a nagging quad injury. What is it, four in a row? Thats not going in the right direction, Mets manager Terry Collins said. But, as I told them last night, if we win the next four, we can forget about it.Right now we got to win the next three here. Thats the next goal is to come out tomorrow and play a good game. Weve still got to come here every day and grind it out, he said.Collins was ejected in the ninth after umpires overturned their original call and took away a home run from Wilmer Flores, ruling a fan reached over the wall and prevented left fielder David Dahl from making a catch.I was going to catch it, Dahl said.DJ LeMahieu drove in three runs and Dahl hit his second homer since making his big league debut this week, helping the Rockies reach .500 for the first time since late May.Colorados push toward playoff position has been boosted by its 6-0 mark against the Mets. Last year,, the Rockies were 0-7 against them.ddddddddddddDe La Rosa (7-7) gave up two runs in six innings and was part of Colorado pitchers retiring the last 16 batters. He is 100-82 lifetime.Hes kind of the poster boy for how you pitch and succeed at Coors Field, Weiss said.Justin Ruggiano had an adventuresome time after signing with New York earlier in the day. Cut by Texas on Tuesday, the veteran major league joined the Mets when they put infielder Jose Reyes on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left ribcage.Ruggiano got a hit, but also overran a ball in center field for an error and was thrown out stealing on a replay reversal. He also was involved in a play that tilted the game.Colon held Colorado hitless until Nolan Arenado singled with one out in the fourth. Carlos Gonzalez followed with a drive to right-center and Ruggiano ran a long way and made a diving try on the warning track, only to have the ball glance off his glove for a double.Story followed with an infield hit and when the throw to first got away, he tried to advance and was thrown out. Dahl then lined a two-run homer for a 3-2 lead.Charlie Blackmon doubled twice and set up LeMahieus two-run single in the fifth.TRAINERS ROOMRockies: OF Ryan Rayburn didnt start for the second straight day, but singled as a pinch-hitter in the ninth. His left knee was bruised Friday night when he was hit by a ball during batting practice.Mets: Cespedes left after grounding out to end the fifth. He stepped gingerly leaving the batters box and jogged down the line. Collins said the Mets will give days off if need be, hoping he can avoid the DL.QUALITY AND QUANTITYDe La Rosa turned in the 19th quality start by a Colorado pitcher in July, tying the team record for a month set in June 2009.UP NEXTRockies: RHP Chad Bettis (9-6, 5.19) is 5-1 in his last nine starts. Colorado has supported him with nearly seven runs a game over that span.Mets: RHP Noah Syndergaard (9-5, 2.45) is 1/3 in his past five starts. The All-Star won his only career start vs. the Rockies last year. ' ' '
